Paralympic champion heads up free Xcite Boccia taster session to mark National Boccia Day

West Lothian Leisure (Xcite) has announced a free taster session of the Paralympic sport of Boccia at its Broxburn venue this Saturday 27 September to mark National Boccia Day.

The ‘come and try’ event at the Xcite Broxburn sports hall runs from 1pm-3pm and will feature a range of fun Boccia themed activities, including a throwing challenge, Battleships Boccia and full games. Boccia is a Paralympic target sport, similar to bowls or curling, where players aim leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball, the jack. It is played sitting down and is suitable for all ages and abilities, including people with physical disabilities.

Helping to introduce the sport on the day will be Jim Anderson OBE MBE, one of Scotland’s most decorated Paralympians. A six-time Paralympic swimmer, Jim’s incredible career in the pool has earned him worldwide recognition and national honours. Since retiring from swimming, he has turned his sporting focus to Boccia, a precision sport that combines skill, tactics and inclusivity.

Jim now competes nationally, coaches others in the game and is passionate about sharing his love of the sport. He said: “Boccia is a fantastic sport because it’s truly for everyone. It’s fun, it’s tactical, and it brings people together. I love how inclusive it is, whether you are new to the sport, looking for a social activity, or keen to compete, Boccia gives you that chance. I’d encourage anyone to come along to Xcite Broxburn on Saturday and give it a try.”

Justin Murphy, Leisure Manager at West Lothian Leisure, Xcite Broxburn said: “We’re really excited to introduce this new sport at Xcite Broxburn, which by its very nature is accessible to everyone, no matter age or sporting ability. It’s also a lot of fun and an incredibly social activity. The drop-in session offers participants a chance to try the sport for free, and if they like it, come back for more!”

Jonathan Kennedy, Boccia Development Officer at Scottish Disability Sport added: “Scotland has a proud history in Boccia, with our players achieving success on the European and world stage and even making up nearly half of the Paralympics GB squad. That legacy is built on strong coaching and community support, and our aim now is to build on it by encouraging more people to try the sport and discover its benefits.”

The free drop in session at Xcite Broxburn is part of a nationwide celebration to raise awareness of Boccia, a Paralympic sport with no Olympic equivalent. West Lothian Leisure will be running weekly Boccia sessions every Tuesday from 2-3pm at Xcite Broxburn, suitable for all ages and abilities.
