HMS Unicorn
The Cunningly Good Group was appointed by the Unicorn Preservation Society in November 2024 to produce two exterior signs for HMS Unicorn, Scotland’s oldest ship and popular Dundee visitor attraction and accredited museum.
The signs were to sit on the fence just outside of the ship and aimed to do two things: explain the preservation challenge and the urgent need to save the ship and explain the Unicorn Preservation Society’s vision of ‘Project Safe Haven’ – the long-term vision of moving the ship to dry dock and establishing a heritage center in the heart of Dundee.
The Cunningly Good Group designed and wrote the copy for both signs, the first landscape sign highlighting the preservation challenge, its history and the bicentenary of the ship, with a QR code enabling passersby to donate money by text message. The second vertical sign focused on safeguarding the ship for the future through Project Safe Haven. The sign explains the project and its various phases, with strong calls to action included at the bottom, directing people to the website or enabling them to donate through the QR code.
The aluminium board signs with adhesive vinyl were installed by Dundee printing firm Winter and Simpson and positioned so visitors to the ship and those passing by would be able to read the information, find out more information on the website, or donate immediately through the QR codes.
